Andy Borowitz almost died, but lived to tell this stranger-than-fiction tale. In his first-ever work of autobiography, the comedian and New York Times bestselling author tells how a freakish medical condition descended upon him one October afternoon and led him to the brink of death – in a New York hospital “consistently rated one of the ten best in the country.” What happens when “one of the funniest people in America” (CBS News Sunday Morning) comes face to face with his own mortality? An Unexpected Twist is in equal parts harrowing and hilarious – and a moving affirmation of what it means to be alive.

Any time a doctor says, "I'm going to be extra careful this time" you know you've got problems. Andy Borowitz with problems? Who knew? Andy takes on a very serious issue - and it's purely autobiographical - and somehow keeps us laughing throughout. I think what surprised me the most was the suspense I felt as I read this (kind of like each time I read "The Day Lincoln Was Shot" by Jim Bishop, and I hear myself muttering under my breath, "Don't go to Ford's tonight!"). Yes, Andy wrote it, so I sort of knew the ending, but I didn't know the message until I got to the end. Andy Borowitz is a brilliant writer and funny guy extraordinaire, but like our beloved Mark Twain, he is also acutely aware of human nature and the human condition. I also enjoyed getting to "meet" Olivia, Andy's wife (fun coincidence that has nothing to do with Andy's book: Mark Twain's wife was also named Olivia). Olivia is a keeper. So is this book. Thanks, Andy!Product details

An Unexpected Twist Single eBook Andy Borowitz Reviews
Good reading while on the plane or waiting in a doctor's office. Several places with out-loud chuckles (that you can not share with the persons sitting next to you) especially about those physiological functions that we do not often speak about in public...but have to share with our spouses in real life day to day basis. Several of us can identify with Andy's 'short story' chapters in one point of our life or another. It's a good short read.
I surprised myself when reading this short piece on my , in my hotel room, alone, during a business trip. I laughed out loud several times, and at one point, found myself laughing UNCONTROLLABLY. That is, laughing in the way one does when talking with friends and someone says something that truly "strikes your funnybone"...and you just can't stop laughing for several minutes. Not a common experience, for me at least, and one I don't think I have **ever** had before while simply reading, all alone.
Partly it's Andy, of course, who is one of the funniest guys I've read, but it's also the very personal, very believable -- and somehow familiar -- experience he's recounting. Maybe you need to at least have had a colonoscopy at some point to fully appreciate it, but I call this HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I had no idea what to expect when I started to read this story. I chuckled at the first paragraph... I was hooked by the end of the 2nd page! It only takes about 30 minutes to read and I couldn't put it down. It's actually about a serious subject, but it's one of the funniest stories I've ever read! I work in a hospital and maybe that's why it just made me laugh out loud all the way through it. Loved this story though and I do highly recommend it. Can't believe I got it for 99 cents!! (For Adults Only)
Its October of 2008 and author/humorist Borowitz is suffering from abdominal pains, constipation, and a bloated stomach. Per an Internet search, he tries prune juice and exercise. His wife then calls their health insurance company's hotline, fills the nurse in on his symptoms, and after she learns he hasn't passed gas in at least 24 hours, sternly directs that he get to an E.R., ASAP. After waiting two hours before anyone sees him at a hospital consistently rated on of the top ten in America, they take some x-rays and move Andy to a room to wait for a doctor.
Finally, a doctor enters, looking all of 12 years old. His diagnosis - 'distension.' A CAT scan is ordered, followed by a parade of other doctors, each higher in the medical hierarchy than the last. Finally, the results of his CAT scan - Andy has a twisted colon.
Treatment begins via a colonoscopy, with the added intention of untwisting the problematic area. This is followed by a special laxative designed to clean one out, which it does very well, over the next two days in preparation for surgery to remove the problem area. Encourage by a friend to carefully check out his surgeon, Andy realizes he has no way of doing so - and doesn't even meet the surgeon until after the operation.
Pain continues after the operation, and his surgeon recommends enemas - something not covered in their wedding vows nine months prior. Symptoms continue, and its back to the E.R. After being hooked up to numerous lines and having his stomach pumped over and over, an emergency x-ray reveals a leak where his colon was sewed back together. This time there's no time to clean out his colon - its emergency surgery, exactly what the doctors were trying to avoid originally. And this time, the doctors say survival odds are only 50%.
Borowitz survives, but learns that in order to foolproof the outcome, doctors have disconnected his small intestine from the large intestine, allowing the latter three months to heal. Meanwhile, Andy's small intestine extends outside the body and empties into an ileostomy bag. Andy's next medical problem, besides getting the recommended exercise and constantly changing the leaking bag, is that the little piece of protruding intestine is protruding further and further. So the operation to reconnect is moved up a month.
Borowitz's 'Bottom Line' - 'Life really is precious and you have to make the most of every minute.'
My 'Bottom Line' - if this is the kind of care and results one can expect from one of America's top ten hospitals, I'd hate to imagine what goes on in the rest. The really bad news - hospitals and physicians make more money making mistakes than doing the job right the first time!
P.S. For 99 cents I'll tell you about my botched broken leg operation. Just kidding about the 99 cents, but it really was botched. Like Borowitz it took forever to receive treatment, I went with the assigned surgeon, and fortunately lived to regret it. It took another surgeon (very carefully selected this time), and nearly 9 months before I could walk again without crutches.
