In 445 A.D., the son of Attila the Hun's older brother, Bleda, journeys to the valley of the Vejania to bind the valley to Attila through marriage. He faithfully follows the traditions of the valley's people; he chooses a young girl to be his wife, surprising everyone since she is no great beauty. However, the valley's shaman, a beautiful woman, is enamored with the Warrior Prince of the Huns and is fixated on her ambitions to become a queen. When he rebuffs her advances, she curses him. The curse takes effect in ways she never expected to occur...playing into an ancient conflict between the Slavic gods. 1,586 years later, the 112th reincarnation of the young man, in love with the latest daughter of many generations of daughters, seeks to end the curse...with help from the Orthodox Church in the small town where his foster parents have brought him.

The Cowboy at the Mall; The Hun at the Gates Trjc 9781630841843 Books

An enjoyable read; the author alternates chapters between 445 A.D. and 2013 A.D. as he weaves a tale about a fictional nephew of Attila the Hun caught in a web of ancient animosity between the gods of the Slavic peoples conquered by that warlord, and his modern day reincarnation. The Orthodox Church gets involved as it tries to solve the mystery of the young man's repeated appearances through history, always as a dark-haired, dark-eyed, extraordinarily handsome and fit teenager, who always falls in love with a gangly, long-haired, blue-eyed younger teenage girl... the descendent of her predecessors.

Similar to his prior book, the author takes care to develop his characters carefully. Each is believable and robustly presented to the reader, the motivations for their actions understandable.

The ending is a fun twist on the Slavic mythology that is central to the story.
